Moroccan tree of life

In the narrow streets of distant Agadir under the scorching desert sun, traders carry bottles of precious liquid, accompanied only by the gentle breeze of the Atlantic … priceless liquid with a deep golden color, pungent flavor and aroma of walnut and exotic spices known as argan oil . Every year local African tribes (Berber) gather around 350,000 tons of argan  to produce over 12 million liters of oil with exceptional medicinal and nutritional properties.

Argan oil Arganiya barbed (Argania spinosa) known as the “tree of life” or “iron tree” for centuries provides oil, medicine, food, construction material and fuel. In the valley of Dra, an area no greater than 8,000 km2 on the edge of the Sahara grows over 2 million trees. Argania spinosa, a tree with very deep roots, reaching a height of 10 meters and circumference of his crown exceed 15 meters. The fruits of this tree are green and look like olives, but are larger and rounded. Inside the fruit is located pitted with a very hard shell, which has three nuts. From the nuts produced precious argan oil – extremely long and laborious process, to produce 1 liter of oil takes more than 20 hours. Argan barbed lived about 150-250 years.

The oil from the fruit of the Moroccan argan is considered one of the most valuable and expensive oil in the world. This Abdelahi (known Moroccan historian) claims that in the 8th century AD starts export of argan oil in the Middle East. Every year in Africa produce around 12 million liters of oil, amid 9 billion liters of sunflower oil and approximately three billion liters of olive oil. Argan oil is particularly rich in vitamin A and unsaturated fatty acids (about 80% of it), good for the heart and blood vessels. The oil is rich in tocopherols and phenolic compounds, which protect skin from free radical damage and slow the aging process. It was found that the oleic acid in the oil makes it especially useful for the regulation of cholesterol. Studies show that taking 2 tablespoons thereof daily for a month, can significantly reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood. Moreover, the composition of the Argan oil can be found substances such as antibiotics and fungicides, and as substances contributing to the improvement of blood circulation, digestion and increasing the body’s defenses.

What is the main disadvantage of African oil?

Argan oil contains alpha-linolenic acid, which must be present in the daily menu. This means that it is recommended that the oil be supplemented with rapeseed and soybean oil. Like olive oil, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids should not be subjected to heat treatment, because they lose their taste and health benefits. Recommended Argan oil can be stored in the refrigerator and used within a short time after opening the bottle.
